I've seen them both. Is there a distinction between "soy" and "soya" in the English language, in that they both are 'valid' words, meaning different things or used in some different grammatical way; are they both describing the very same product and both words are interchangable; or is one of them actually wrong?

Basically I think soy is is used in American English and soya in British English. As far as I know they both mean the same thing.
You are correct it is a soy bean and I have never head the word soya anywhere in the US even China Town back home in San Francisco the Chinese never said soya. My Chinese aunt never said soya.
